Upgrading your grandma's competition leaderboard.

Reebok CrossFit Medfield (a Triib customer) was putting on its first major competition. They had several television screens hung up around the gym and wanted to use them to display the leaderboard for the event. After catching a glimpse as to what the leaderboard looked like, I asked if I could come up with something visually more compelling.

Exploration

Three things were important to me in trying to improve the experience:

  • a visually friendlier scrolling leaderboard - the auto scroll shouldn't ever stop and be a bit more friendly to scan
  • a branded experience - I wanted Reebok CrossFit Medfield to be able to put their best foot forward in the event, to be able to use their logo and branding
  • taking advantage of social media - doing this would tap into the free media being produced on location and displaying prominately a live feed would encourage more social media postings

Experience

Completed over the course of several late nights, I was able to:

  • write a content scrapper that would ping the Triib servers every minute to get the freshest data.
  • use an API feed from Instagram to poll for the hashtag #sufferonsaturday
  • write a custom scroller that was dynamic to the amount of content and apply the right amount of speed to make it viewable and readable
  • design and develop a themeable leaderboard where the event colors and logo could be easily updated
  • develop a responsive design that would allow for multiple streams and leaderboard columns to be displayed

The event was a success!

Because of all the photos Reebok CrossFit Medfield were tagged in, they gained more social media followers and marketing collateral for future social posts. Reebok CrossFit Medfield went on to host Suffer On Saturday 2 the following year.

7 months after the event, I recieved a letter from Triib asking if I would consider working with them. I'm still considering it. ?????
